HYLAND TURFCARE
CASE STUDIES
Gowna GAA Full Drainage Installation
Overview
In June 2020, Hyland Turfcare completed a full primary and secondary drainage install at Gowna GAA grounds to their training pitch.
The pitch was built originally in 2005. In 2019, the Gowna club decided to make the wise decision to invest in upgrading their pitch.
As with many clubs the training pitch is where the highest volume of usage occurs and thus it is necessary that the pitch is well drained to provide a safe and stable surface for all players.
Having met with the club officials, and after assessing the condition of the pitch, Hyland Turfcare designed a solution to accommodate the clubs requirements within their available budget.
Approach
In late 2019 secondary drainage slits were installed using a Shelton Drainage Gravel Band machine. When the weather became suitable in summer 2020 the main perimeter drain was installed.
The lateral pipe drains were installed using a Shelton Drainage Whizwheel Trencher and backfilled with a Shelton Drainage Gravel Cart. There was also a new manhole installed to accommodate the new drainage system outflow.
All trenches were backfilled with round drainage gravel and surfaces reinstated using approved sportsturf sand and then seeded. The pitch was then topdressed with the same sand to reestablish an even surface level across the pitch.
Conclusion & Results
The pitch has been greatly improved by the drainage upgrade. It will provide a quality playing surface
so the players of Gowna can perform to their best for many seasons to come.
“Michael is always a pleasure to deal with and his attention to detail is superb. He has worked on our pitches for over 20 years now”
